Nike Track Vans

Pike Awning provided a unique covered area that could be set up and taken down in a short time period: three awning-like structures attached to1960s-era Volkswagen vans with a separate custom tent structure that connected all three. This project was first used in Eugene, Ore., for the U.S. 2008 Olympic Track and Field Trials. It will tour the country during the summers of 2008and 2009. The project was complex for several reasons. One, the shapes were complex; all the members are arched. Two, the entire system had to be able to be set up in less than an hour and all the pieces had to fit into small bags that were loaded into the vans. Three, the system had to be designed so the vans could be used individually or together and the center tent structure had to be able to accommodate the vans not being parked in the perfect alignment. Fourth, the entire project had to be completed in less than three weeks.
